Rome via walking.

We are arriving to Rome via train. We have very little time. What sites do you recommend we see? We have read that there are many sights we could see just walking. Would this be around the Colosseum?

Does anyone know the easiest way to get to the Colosseum area from the train station?

Are we able to see maybe just the outside of Vatican City without getting tickets?

Look at a google map of Rome. I walked to the colosseum area from the Central Train station. I was not bad.
If you are at the Central Train station, you can also take the Metro to get closer (like across the street from the Colosseum)

The only public areas in Vatican City are St Peters Basilica ( no ticket needed) and the Vatican Museums ( admission ticket required)

"We have very little time" ??? 2 hours? 3 days?

The easiest way to Colosseum from Termini is the metro. However it is easily walkable and many churches filled with art to see on the way

If you are arriving in late afternoon, stick to what is close to your hotel. If your hotel is close to the Termini, the Colosseum is within easy striking distance. If not going inside the Colosseum, you can easily walk to Vatican City within an hour, or take a leisurely stroll via the Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps. See, four major sights within a couple of hours.
If you arrive before closing time, you may gain entrance into Saint Peter's.

Just so you are not confused. The main train station in Rome is called Termini - not Central. In Milan it is called Central train station or other cities but not Rome. Most of the major sites are within easy walking because basically that is what they were doing 2000 years ago. It is about an hour walk from Termini to Vatican City but that would be the furthest. Everything else is really inbetween Termini and the Vatican.
