Rome: very light small backpack in museums and churches? Need answers quickly

My sister has some special needs. She's in her mid-60's, and, aside from some other health issues that came up this year, she recently had a large hernia operation plus she's a type 1 diabetic. That all sounds awful but, truthfully, she's doing great and determined to do our 13 day trip to Rome we've been planning. She's only allowed to carry the most basic amount of weight - She had plans to carry a very light smallish day backpack (better than a side bag) - but I am worried about churches and museums. She has to have some emergency snacks with her and her blood sugar reader, her phone and wallet (Her husband will carry the rest).

Tell me: yay or absolute nay to a small light daypack?

Thanks very much.

Hi ebean,

Backpacks no larger than 14" should not be a problem - especially if it is a soft material like Kipling or Vera Bradley.

The Vatican and St. Peter's Basilica have a security check. Jackets, bags, and small umbrellas are screened. (Large bags and umbrellas will need to be checked so do not bring.)

Water and snacks should be okay also as long as they are not openly carried.

Canes and other assisted devices are okay.

Most other churches don't have a security check at their doors, but they do appreciate not bringing in large bags of any kind.

The Pantheon may or may not have a security check - I have seen both during the week days.

Shoulders and knees must be covered in churches.

The Borghese does not allow bags (except that I read in a thread on the forum that a woman carried a small 7x5 purse - maybe about 8 in.)

I don't know if your sister would be allowed because of her medical condition to have the backpack under her jacket. (?)

The Borghese greeters give people a plastic see - through bag for the valuables like a wallet or water bottle. You must check a larger bag if you have it with you.

You may want to check all direct websites for any updates in their policies.

Another idea is maybe you can call Walks of Italy - tour leader - and speak to their customer service agents. They lead tours in The Borghese.

Perhaps they are more familiar with up-to-date policies. (?)

You're welcome.

Have a nice trip!

I love Rome. Every corner you turn, there is an archaeological surprise.

Also, every church, small or large, seems to be a museum within itself.

Hopefully you will visit St. Peter's Basilica (a different feel once you enter the church and more breathing space)

Please check out the Blessed Sacrament Chapel in St. Peter's. It is on the same side as the Pieta.

I was at the Borghese in June and I can tell you they will not let you take in your water bottle. It was about 35 Celsius but it didn't matter. My wife and I had to throw ours away

Just got back from BOE 14 days. Yes to small light daypack. Many people in our group has small daypacks and no one ever had a problem. There were security checks and our guides told us not to bring metal water bottles, but no one ever had a problem with their bag.
