My teenage daughter and I will be in Rome on Dec. 31, Jan. 1, and Venice on Jan. 6. I am assuming that a number of sites will be closed on one or more of these holidays. Does anyone know what is open these dates or have suggestions for holiday activities?
If you dont get an answer to your question, I would go and enjoy the places which ARE open. You will find enough sights to make your stay memorable.
As soon as you land go to the Tourist Information Office and ask your questions. They will know everything and can suggest holiday activities.
Thanks for responding Carl. Since many sites will be closed, we are going to enjoy walking around and experiencing holiday activities offered.
I can't say about Venice, but to second Carl's suggestions, there is a lot to see and do in Rome that is strictly outdoors (i.e., not closed), especially at Christmas time.
A few examples: Trevi Fountain, Pantheon (exterior at least), Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona which will likely have its Christmas market running, the giant Christmas tree outside of the Colosseum, Trastevere (fun neighborhood to wander around in), St. Peter's Square, Campidoglio, etc.
Most churches will likely also be open, although they may have restricted visitor hours if they have additional services.
Although the Forum is now a paid site, you can walk down along the Via Fori Imperiali and peek over the fence into the remains of the Roman Forum on the one side, and Trajan's & Augustus' Forum on the other, as well as Trajan's Column, several Arches, and the exterior of the Colosseum.
