Rome/Vatican tour company

We will be making our first visit to Rome 26 Oct-2 Nov(early departure). High on our list of visits will be the Vatican, Sistine Chapel & St Peters also will tour the Colosseum & Forum. For these we would like to take a small group tour. Have checked the Vatican Site small group tour(under 16 people)are 300 Euro per person plus entrance charges with an "official Vatican tour guide", while I have seen sites listed in Rick Steve's Rome 2013 starting at 54 Euro per person. Quite a difference and what would be the difference. Any suggestions/recommendation on reputable tour group. I had previously seen on the travel help line two tour companies that fellow travellers recommended, unfortunately I can't find them. Previous information on help line was dated back to 2009. thanks Lui

I think you've misunderstood the cost of the small tour group. It's 250 for the guide for the group, plus entry, plus headphones and reservation fees. If you have a group of 10 that would cost a total of 465 euros for everything, including entry fee. That's only 46.50 each. You might want to reconsider this option if you have a group. If there are only two of you it would cost 293.00 euros and that includes the entry fee. Donna

Thanks Donna, make much more sense. My understanding is that we can't reserve until 60 days prior to date. Will also look at some private tours. Information flow can get overwhelming.

Also take a look at Context Rome's website. They limit groups to 6 people, which makes such a difference in a crowded site. I've always had great experiences with them.

Thanks everyone very much appreciated. We were also recommended Walks of Italy "http://www.walksofitaly.com" - also in RS Rome book. They responded very quickly to my e-mail. Decision time.
