Rome: use public transport to Via Appia Antica?

I plan to be in Rome for two full days in March. One day will be spent at the Vatican, and I would like to spend the second day at the Via Appia Antica, and possibly the Basilica di San Sabastiano. Are either or both of these accessible via the metro in Rome? I will not have a car, and I prefer not to hire a cab or Uber. Any assistance, along with any feedback about either or both of these sites, is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

There are buses that connect with subway/trains, at Laurentina and Anagnina. These are normal city buses, included in the same tickets you use for the metro, local trains etc. They are a bit tricky in the sense they come just every half hour (often late) and the stops that bisect Via Appia do no have any special signpost.

Yet, if you go on Google Maps, you can search for transit options. Just give yourself a little extra time for the buses (which are generally unreliable time-wise throughout the city). Your best option is to take a bus to the far end of your Via Appia walking sector, and then walk back to the city center. It is a pleasant walk most of the time - unless under hot and windless summer weather, when it becomes exhausting.

Looks like the bus #118 goes right from Central Rome to the Catacombs of San Sebastián.

A few years ago I recall taking the Metro to Circo Massimo and then a bus to the Appia Antica, I think we got off at the Appia Antica Cafe and we walked our socks off that day, out-and-back. We used Rick Steves’ Rome guidebook as he includes complete logistics for visiting the area. Things may well have changed in the past few years so consulting a current Rick Steves guide might be useful.
