Rome/ Tuscany road trip

Help! Returning to Italy in May/June 2020. Traveling with 6 adults. Want to rent a car and explore. Thinking we might enjoy a villa and take day trips. What towns would you recommend staying in. We plan to fly into Rome. Not sure to rent a car there, or get a car service to town and rent a car there.
Need a non stop flight NY to...,Rome.

Things to ponder:
Does anyone have van driving experience, or will you rent two cars?
How many days? How many bases do you prefer? Are you flying home from Rome as well?

Jersey- For 6 adults visiting Tuscany, you will need an agriturismo for accommodation. How many days do you plan to stay in Tuscany? As far as central location to explore the region, your start off point can be Tuscan towns such as Siena, Cortona, or Montepulciano. I posted an agriturismo near Siena on the link below that sleeps 20. Take train from Rome to Siena and rent a car from there to explore the country side. You might need a mini van to fit 6 people though.

We really need a little more info.

To look up flights, use Google Flight Matrix. Book on individual airlines.

With six of you, and luggage you'll probably need 2 cars, much easier to drive on narrow roads, and less expensive than a van.
Each driver will need an IDP, translation of your home license. Available at AAA both in person and online.

You have to be aware of ZTL zones and general rules of the road. The company below will send you a comprehensive guide if you send them your e mail.

It's not recommended to drive after an international flight. Option would be a train to Orvieto and spend the night, or train to Chiusi and drive to centrally located lodging or Florence either spend a few nights then drive to Villa or Agriturismo.

We book our vehicles with Autoeurope.com.
Generally using either Hertz or Europecar, with zero deductible.

Most villas are in the countryside, check Tuscany Accommodations.com.

One of our favorite lodgings. Very centrally located. They do have apartments for six.

Last, what do you want to do in Tuscany? Food, wineries, scenic drives???

And welcome to the forum.

Edited to add.

Thank you! What a wealth of info on this forum!
We are interested in enjoying wine tours, and a more authentic experience. We’ve done the go to tourist spots last time. 2 people have not experienced Rome, so we thought maybe they could travel by train for the day.
I’m feeling overwhelmed! Last time we travelled with a tour group... all the planning done for us.

Alli - Let us assist you on planning this trip, no need to overwhelm yourself and be stressed. We provide a free service unlike a tour group. We will empower you with a wealth of knowledge regarding Italy before you depart on your trip. We've already given you a few ideas. Therefore, keep us in the loop if you have further questions regarding this fantastic trip.

A wine tour will be more appropriate to do from your base town in Tuscany rather then Rome. Check the link for wine tours in Tuscany.

Choosing a place that some of the group could day trip to Rome from will help limit it considerably.

Hi Alli,
We are actually taking our family back to Italy May/June! This will be our 3rd time. We have always rented a car to tour through Tuscany. You will not be able to rent a car inside Rome due to the ZTL's. We have rented a car from the Rome airport (outside the ZTL)as well as a little town outside of Rome called Viterbo. Both were super easy. The train station in Viterbo sits across the street from the car rental. You will need to be careful not to enter into the ZTL's when you get close to any larger cities such as Florence, Sienna. There will be 6 of us traveling this time as well. I rented a 9 passenger van through Alaska Airlines to accommodate us as well as our luggage. I thought the price was reasonable.
Please be sure to research the restricted driving zones(ZTL) and be familiar of what their signs look like. The fines are super steep. The Rome airport is far enough outside the ZTL that you will be fine renting there.

We usually rent cars at Rome FCO but have rented in city center Rome too, no problems with ZTLs. Via Veneto car pick up location. They directed us out to Autostrada.

Be aware that if you take trains at any time, you have to handle your own luggage, sometimes with only a very short amount of time to do so. If you pack light, trains are wonderful.
