Rome travel planning tips

Hello:

I am going on a backpacking trip to Rome March 8-12.
I already have booked a cheap hostel for those dates but may change it depending on my plans.

I want to walk around and explore, take the buses and train services as much as I can.
I definitely want to check out Pompeii ( Being a huge Pink Floyd fan), the creepy catacombs, hidden treasures of Rome and around apart from the famous places where people go for sure.
Are there free tours for students and stuff which I need to be aware of from before?

I need suggestions with my trip itinerary planning please.
Thanks in advance. 🙂

Two Rick Steves resources that suffice, so you don't need a guide:
1) his Italy guidebook
2) his free app (I have an Android version) which has the audible version of his tours

They work well for most any site.

Additionally, for Pompeii, here is a web page where you can find a PDF describing all the structures:
http://pompeiisites.org/en/visiting-info/map-and-guide-to-the-excavations/

I downloaded it and printed it - 3 pages per sheet of paper - the PDF format is of a pamphlet (narrow and tall) so 3-wide fit on a page.
