Rome travel from airport to Pantheon

We will be dropping off our rental car in Rome on a Sunday in July. The only Avis rental car depot that is open on Sunday in Rome is at the airport. We had the option of parking it overnight near our accommodation at the Pantheon and returning it to the depot near the Borghese gardens the next morning - requiring that we find a parking station and avoid time limited zones - these appear to be different for day and night. To save getting caught in the peak hour traffic and time limited zones we thought that we would just drop off the car at the airport on the Sunday late afternoon. There will be 5 of us in our travel group and we were just wondering what would be the best way to travel back to our accommodation at the Pantheon area.

You should contact romecabs.com for a private transfer. They'll meet you at the airport and take you directly to your hotel. With 5 this will be cheaper than taking the express train into the city and then walking or taking a cab. The express will cost 14 per person.

I agree with Donna. Take a cab, as you can be dropped off directly at your destination and will not have to mess with taking a train and then a cab which will cost you more in the long run. With 5 people however, you will also need to make sure that you get a cab that can accommodate all of you and your luggage.

romecabs.com is a private transfer service that you book ahead of time. They meet you inside with a sign and help you with your bags.

A regular taxi you must get at the rank outside. They don't help with luggage. the fixed rate is 40 euros for up to 4 people and their luggage. You might not be able to easily find a cab that'll fit 5 plus the driver. If you decide to get a regular cab make sure you ask about the fixed rate. Most cabbies at the ranks are honest. It's the ones who approach you soliciting their services that you have to watch out for.

There's also a shuttle bus from the airport that costs 8 euros per person, but I don't know how they are with luggage.

Be careful with taxis; some of our tour companions a couple of weeks ago paid 70 euros for a trip from the airport to the city center. You should probably check out the company Donna recommended; at least you can verify the rate ahead of time.

We took the Leonardo Express, but it's not an economical choice for larger groups, and we had to wait almost an hour for a train because of cancellations and delays. And besides, it's a hike from the train station to the Pantheon (but doable.)
