Rome: Trastevere to Termini buses

Hello,
I am thinking of staying in Trastevere when I visit Rome in October.
I plan to go on at least 3 trips out of Rome, and of course I've heard there are a few things IN Rome I might want to see.
I understand there are at least 2 buses that would get me from Trastevere to Stazione Termini.
Has anyone on here taken these buses (specifically, from Trastevere to Termini)? If so, could you tell me:

  1. How long is the ride
  2. Is it possible to get a seat if you get on the bus in Trastevere
  3. How frequently do these buses leave from Trastevere?

Also, is it possible to walk from Trastevere to a Rome metro line that would take me to Termini?

Thanking you for any advice you can offer,
Angelo

Tom, You're best and easiest bet is: you can take the tram 8 from Trastevere (runs every 15?) across the river to Corso Emmanuele and take the express bus 40 straight to Termini. The tram takes 2-7 minutes (depending where you pick it up) and then you have to wait for the bus (up to 20) and then maybe a 15 min ride... The express is a double bus so depending on what time, you should be able to get a seat.

The answer depends a good bit on WHERE in Trastevere you're staying. For example, there's an H bus that links directly from Termini to parts of Trastevere and it might be perfect for you. (Forget doing the subway from Trastevere.)

Google Maps is a pretty good resource for these sorts of questions since it links directly into the Rome transit system data if you choose the "Directions To" option. It will also display the subway stops so you can see how far out of the way those are from Trastevere.

Where in Trastevere? Makes all the difference.

Hello, Michael and Nigel,

I will be staying at via L. Manara 24 - according to the hotel website,
it "overlooks Piazza S. Cosimato and is located a few meters from Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere, the real heart of Trastevere area in Rome."

Does that help?

Thanks,
Tom

Thank you to everyone who replied. While I appreciate the links to the maps, I was hoping to hear from people who have actually had experience with those buses. It sounds like I might be near Bus H. It also sounds like I'll be spending a lot of time on it!

Grazie,
Tom

I would not stay in Trastevere if I was doing that many day trips. It is just very inconvenient to get to Termini. Probably the reason you are not getting the response you want, is that most of the experienced Rome travelers would not be staying in Trastevere to go to Termini. There is no Metro in that area. The tram would be your best bet if close to the tram otherwise it is the bus and buses can be very slow going in Rome because of traffic.

Tom, I'm puzzled by your need to get to Termini other than for arriving/departing the city? Unless you have mobility issues, you are a reasonable walk across the Tevere to the Colosseum, Forum, Palatine, Camp di Fiori and other attractions. We stayed up in Prati our first time, and walked from there to Santa Maria in Trastevere - which is near to where you are staying.

Granted, we're big walkers so you may not want to hoof it that far but you don't need to take a bus EVERYWHERE, and will probably have a lot more fun if you don't.

Besides the bus, you will have a metro stop across the river at Circo Massimo and Colosseo.

You are staying at Hotel Trastevere, I have stayed there twice now, both times for a week. They are a great hotel in a great location. When we go back, that is where we will stay again. Getting to Termini, as one other said is easy, a tram or a walk to Largo Argentina and then a bus, or Bus H from Via Trastevere direct to Termini. No more difficult or time consuming than any place else in Rome. Buses are every 20-30 min or less.

I do suggest for restaurants trying Popi-Popi,,,not fancy, but good Roman grub, Pizzaria Dar Poeta..maybe one of the best in town, then la Scala on Piazza del la Scala for a bit more upscale.

Thank you all for your responses. My wrists are about to fall off from flight-hunting, but I wanted to clarify that, on my budget, it seems almost impossible to find a place I wouldn't mind staying on the Central Rome side of the Tiber (meaning, a relatively quiet, clean place). The room I'll be staying in faces a courtyard, not the street, and I'm hoping that will alleviate some of the noisiness of Rome. I will be doing at least 3 day trips, but I'd like my nights and early mornings to be relaxing.

If anyone knows of a clean B&B/hotel/apartment north (?) of the Tiber, preferably near a Metro line, where one does not experience lots of street noise at night, that can be had for under 100 euros a night, please tell me! (Or just have a good laugh at my expense for suggesting such a place exists).

KATHY, I love walking, and I've walked all over Palermo and Naples; from looking at maps of Rome, it appears that most of the really famous sites are just too far from Trastevere, but I'm glad to hear this may not be the case.

Again, thanks for any feedback you can offer re: less expensive, clean, somewhat quiet places to stay - I can't do any more searches, have to give my wrists a break!

Ciao,
Tom

What out of town trips are you planning? Some may be just as easily done from Trastevere Station which is south of your location and also easily reached on bus or street car.
