Rome - transportation

We will be staying in Ostica Antica while visiting Rome - how is the best way to arrive in Rome? Should we take the train, or would a taxi or private driver be affordable for a group of 4. I also heard there was a water taxi - do you know anything about that?

The simplest and cheapest option by far is the train. The "water taxi" you've heard about is probably the daily cruise down the Tiber from Rome. It sounds a lot nicer than it actually is. The Tiber is not a particularly pretty river, nor does it go through pretty neighborhoods. And FWIW, it's Ostia, not Ostica. :-) Happy travels.

Here is all you need re the Rome-OA train. http://www.ricksteves.com/plan/destinations/italy/ostia.htm. OA is a small village at the gates of a large ruins. My guess is that OA would the perfect place to stay to photograph the ruins in early and late light. But I've never heard of anyone staying in that village or eating there. That is a measure of my ignorance, not a measure of OA's hospitality trades. Please let this Board know how it works out. It would be a great addition. Have fun. FYI, although I have no doubt that you already know, for train purposes OA is the stop for the ruins & village. Ostia Lido aka Lido di Ostia is the stop for the large town on the beach a few minutes farther from Rome. In the ruins, the tiles on the floor of the gymnasium are worth a close up photo. It's not a short walk out there.
