Rome train stations

We will be taking the train from Venice to Rome and I would like to try the Italo train. However, the one that goes to the Termini station is at an inconvenient time---departing Venice at 14:55 and arriving Rome at 19:40, pretty late for check-in at our apartment. The train we would prefer arrives at Tiburtina at 16:30, which is much better.

What is the difference between the stations? I have read that Tiburtina is not as convenient, but is that referring to public transport? We would likely tKe a cab to our apartment in Trastevere.

Lola,

Tiburtina station is actually fairly convenient, and is only about two Metro stops from Termini. As I recall, it's been extensively renovated recently, although I haven't been through there in awhile. I wouldn't have any hesitation in going to Tiburtina, and I'm sure there will be Cabs waiting there for the trip to Trastevere (nice area!).

Buon Viaggio!

I guessing it is probably a third farther from Termini so the cab ride would be more expensive. You can reach it via bus and metro but from Trastevere it would involved at least two changes. Tiburtina has been remodeled some, is smaller and easier to get around in than Termini. It is a similar to the remote airports that discount airlines are using. Idea is to take some pressure off of Termini. Personally if staying in Trastevere I would use Termini. Just more convenient.

FYI, a taxi from Tiburtina to northern Trastevere should be in the 15-20 euro range. Makes sense to me since you'll have bags.

Why not take the Regionale train from Tiburtina to Trastavere station. Costs 1 euro and they go every 15 minutes week days.

You could take up Sam's suggestion but keep in mind Trastevere train station is a long walk with luggage to the area where most holiday apartments, restaurants etc are.

Either Termini or Tiburtina will likely require you to take a taxi if you have luggage because Trastevere is not walking distance from either. The suggestion to take the train from Tiburtina to Trastevere station may make sense if your apartment is close enough to the station (which is located on the southern part of Trastevere). In that case remain on the Italo train. Trastevere station is the last stop after Tiburtina on the Italo train. Check your apartment location to see if it's close enough to the Trastevere station.

The last stop on the Venice-Rome Italo is Ostiense. Not quite Trastavere, but close enough for an easy cab ride.

Thanks, I did see that "Rome east" station as an option for the Italo train but had no idea where is is. I need to get busy with maps.

Lola,

Depending on the location of your apartment, Roma S. Pietro may also work out from the Tiburtina station. From there take a cab.

I like Tiburtina. In fact I'll be there next week.

Not much in the way of shops to distract you, no huge crowds, nice and clean, and plenty of escalators - the tracks are under the bridge - but very simple to navigate.

Bus station just outside. That's where I catch my favourite 492, which happily trundles towards Termini, the Via del Corso, Largo Argentina, Piazza Navona, and winds around to cross the Tiber and run through the Prati to and past the Vatican museums.

I'm sure there are cabs too, but I've never looked for them.

.Italo has a nice lounge up on the bridge with free wifi. It is open to all .Italo passengers but is not often busy.

I really enjoy riding the .Italo trains....

Tiburtino got a lot more then a bit of a renovation. It is brand new and really quite nice. Personally, I would take the regional to Trastevere then the # 8 Tram right up Viale di Trastevere.

The apartment is on Piazza di San Giovanni della Malva, not far from the west end of Ponte Sisto. Does that help sort out what would work best?

We generally take a cab from the train station to our lodging, as that way I do not have to worry about finding the place. (I am the navigator). But if there is a good public transport option that would get us closer without a lot of transfers, that would work.

Or I could just avoid the issue and book a Trenitalia train to Termini.

I have not been to Rome since 1967 so this is all new to me. We will have a weekmeachnin London, Venice and Rome, and I managed to sneak in a few days in Switzerland ( we haven't been there since 2007 due to the expense). When the Swiss franc was $1.20 that was too much. I see this morning it is $1.07. And the euro is $1.14. Nice.

The Tiburtina station was rebuilt after a fire a few years ago. Very easy to navigate. I like Nigel's advice about the bus - love that 492! You'll see a lot of Rome on the way to the Vatican area.

For the small amount it will cost and the convenience, just get a cab. Unless saving 15Euro is a big priority.
