My husband and I are planning a return trip to Rome next Spring. I'd like to fly open jaw from Boston to an alternative airport, spend a few days in another European Country and then take a train into Italy through to Rome. I'm looking for advice from fellow travelers on a scenic train ride. We don't have a specific country in mind as we have only been to Italy and would enjoy any other experience.
Taking a train from Paris, Switzerland, or Munich/Innsbruck, you will have a couple of hours of nice mountain scenery in the middle of a very long train ride (e.g., 8, 10, or more hours). Choose an initial stop that you really want to visit. Then, book a train ticket three months ahead for the best price, or check flight prices (which can still be cheaper) at www.skyscanner.com. Coming into Italy from Nice, France, will give you coastal scenery, but it requires several connections, mostly by slower train.
These are the options for visiting another European country and Rome.
1. Fly BOS to ZRH (Swiss Air). Visit Switzerland (another European country) then train to Milan through the Alps. At Milan change to another train to Rome. About 7 or 8 hours in total.
or
2. Fly BOS to MUC (Luftansa). Visit Bavaria-Germany (another European country), then train from Munich through the Brenner Pass and arrive at Rome about 9 hrs later (change in Verona or Bologna, depending on which train you take).
or
3. Fly BOS to FCO (Alitalia). Visit Vatican State (another European country), then scenic (underground) subway train ride from Vatican Museums station to Piazza di Spagna (Spanish steps) station (less than 10 min).
We did the reverse - into Rome and home from Zurich via Milan. The trip from Milan to Zurich was very scenic.
I like Roberto's third option. Very economical, both for time and money.
Yes I did option 3 last trip and I'm aware it is another European country

Option 1 is appealing. Thx
