I am visiting Rome at the end of May. I have been hearing that some tour companies don't have very good tour guides. Can anyone recommend a good tour company for both in Rome and day trips.

I recommend you look at Context Rome website. I've used them a number of times (including in several other cities). Groups limited to 6, well educated guides with relevant education, interesting, willing to adapt tour to group interests, native English speakers or superb English, and incredibly responsive/helpful office staffs both in the US and Italy.
