rome tourist bus and tram ticket - valid by date or time?

In Rome, a 3-day pass expires at 11:59pm on the 3rd day - i.e. Tuesday in your example. The count starts from day of validation and not purchase. The only pass I recall being valid for a full 72 hours from first use is the vaporetto pass in Venice.

The Roman passes expire at midnight. The Venice passes, on the other hand, go in 24 hour increments. Go figure.

Exactly as Frank from Wilmington says... The BTI expires at midnight of the third day regardless when you first validated it on the first day. The same applies for BIG and CIS. BIG - the first midnight after it was first validated. CIS 7 days at midnight. The single use BIT is good for 100 minutes.
