There is no shortage of guides or tour companies to use in Rome. Any that you've used that stand out?
Interested in free walking tours, paid walking tours, and small group guides to Vatican, Pompeii day trip. We are a party of 5 so we could go on our own or join a bit larger group. Or any out of the ordinary/off the beaten track tours that are not readily found?
We planned an Italy trip in September, and will be using Walk About Tours, Dark Rome tours& Trip Advisor . Walk About has smaller group tours than some of the others. Google the names & click on the geographical area of the country you will be visiting.
I got these names in another section of this forum. Enjoy!
Hey Ruby,
I usually suggest checking out The Roman Guy
https://theromanguy.com/tours/italy/rome
I think they offer a discount on some of their tours.
Start watching their videos - Sean, one of the leads in the company, narrates most of them.
They are a fun watch, down to Earth, easy to understand - geared towards the newer traveler, gives you a peek into Roman attractions and neighborhoods.

Check out their neighborhood series and some how to's for Rome - ordering pizza, cafe, taking a bus or metro, etc. They also have Florence videos.
We used Walks of Italy for the Vatican tour and booked this specific tour. It was great. The tour guide went right to the Sistine Chapel before it got crazy crowded and then we back tracked and saw the rest of the Vatican. When we looped back around a few hours later the Sistine was packed so I'm glad she did that for us.

I’ll second Walks of Italy. We did two of their Rome tours, (Caesar’s Palace/Colosseum and Pristine Sistine) and one Venice (Doge’s Palace/St Mark’s afterhours). Very knowledgeable and professional guides. Highly recommend them.
Eating Italy Sunday Rome (Jewish Ghetto) tour was excellent also.
We used Through Eternity Tours for the Vatican and Colosseum/Forum. They also do tours in Pompeii, Florence and Venice. By Far the best tour company we've used anywhere in Europe. I especially loved the guide we had for the Vatican. She had a Masters in Art History and the stories she told of the history behind the art was outstanding. https://www.througheternity.com/
Thanks for all these great tips. Keep 'em coming! Any suggestions for Pompeii/Naples day tour?
We did The Roman Guy in Rome for 2 tours and 1 tour in Florence. You get a discount when you book 3 tours with them. We also used Walkabout Tours for Tuscany and the Pizza/Gelato Making class in Florence. I was happy with all of our tours. We used a private tour guide recommended by RS for Pompeii but I have to say that was only so-so. The guide would tell us about things and then not want to walk himself to the areas. My husband booked that one. We would go by ourselves to a site at Pompeii and he would wait until we saw it and came back and walk to near the next one and tell us about it and then let us go into the site again by ourselves. Other tour guides there (who were younger than ours) that I could overhear as we walked around didn't do that and seemed way more engaged than ours. I am sorry I don't know our guide's name. I was not impressed by him and it wasn't cheap, and surprised RS recommended him. Hope this helps. Our favorite tour was Pizza and Gelato making in Florence.
We used Walks of Italy for Pristine Sistine, Colosseum and their Crypt tours
All were very very good
I think their discount code is 10ricksteves
They also offer discounts if you book multiple tours
Eating Europe does fabulous food tours- use EATWELL10 for a discount
We recently used Mondo guides www.sharedtours.com for Pompeii and all day Capri boat trip
Both were terrific
Mondo does offer a Naples walking tour as well
All of the above were money well spent IMO
We did The Roman Guy in Rome for 2 tours and 1 tour in Florence. You get a discount when you book 3 tours with them.
Good to know from a person's recent travels. I "thought they offered them;" was not 100% sure.
Also ruby, as a backup (although reviews list it as a very good tour company)
If your travel schedule does not coincide with the other tour companies or other dates and attractions are sold out there is:
DarkRome - similar to Roman Guy and Walks of Italy. Pricing is about the same. https://darkrome.com/rome-tours (They have sales it seems)
