Jana - Consider Ostia Antica as a day tour from Rome. It's an archeological park of Roman ruins and a great learning opportunity for the kids to study Roman history. From Termini Station: Take the B line to Porta San Paolo (Piramide) and from there take the Rome-Lido railway to Ostia Antica station. Train ticket: 1,50 EUR.

You might contact Sonia Tavoletta who guides all Roman sites including the Vatican and will, customize to your family’s needs. It is an unforgettable experience to have a private guide who will focus on you and your kids, not a hoard of 2 dozen. [email protected].

kids really enjoy the Golf Cart Tour which we did with Sean from Angel Tours in Rome, great outfit and nice tour guide.

They also loved climbing the dome at St Peters church although it is a tough climb

Top Bikes, located not far from the coliseum, offers bike tours on the Appian Way out to the catacombs, to Aqueduct Park, where you can get up close to the aqueducts, and stops for cheese, bread and wine (for the adults) en route at a sheep farm. It’s loads of fun and I’ve seen kids participating. The route is mostly flat and the bikes are electric assist. You’re not riding in town for the majority of the trip so no need to worry about Roman traffic.

Another vote for Sonia - I think she’d be terrific with the ages of kids. She is fun, energetic and knows how to circumvent crowds, etc.

Hello and Thanks for all the help. Just got back from Rome. We stayed in an air b&b used Walks with Rome for the Vatican Tour and Thru Eternity for the Colosseum. Both were great but the best tour was the golf cart tour. Google maps didn't work that well when we were trying to find several of the recommended restaurants.
