rome tour

is it recommended that we pay for a tour of Rome if we only have 1 1/2 days in Rome. If so, any recommendations? Thank you. Amy in Colorado

Amy-I have heard many nice things about Romecabs.com (Stefano is the owner). I've emailed him several times and he has always replied and is very courteous. It seems he's a bit pricey but - hey - when are we going to get the chance to tour Rome again? It might be worth the $$$. My sister and I are going to give it a try when we're in Rome in September. I heard they take you around in a Mercedes and are very fun and informative. I think the only drawback (besides the big $$) is that they don't take you into the sites (meaning they don't give you a guided tour themselves) of the sites like the Colosseum. You'd have to give it a try yourself for a tour or hire a guide at the site. Good luck!

Amy, are you a hiker? If you can go up to the Horsetooth and back without difficulty (my brother lives in your town), you can walk anywhere in Rome. With a good map, you can easily walk from St. Peters to the Forum area via the Spainish Steps. That said, if you are older or want comfort, the driver idea presented sounds like fun.

The city center of Rome is very compact. You can easily walk from sight to sight in a short amount of time. Romecabs provides a good service for transport but it seems silly to pay a driver all day long. Taxis are cheap.

Thank you to all for the replies. My original thought on a tour was someone to teach the history of each place. I have no problem walking I just wanted the "insights" that give the tour a more personal twist rather than just reading in the tour books. Amy Colorado

Our approach when we are in a city for the first time is to use the hop on/off buses with a good map. Sometimes we will ride the bus completely around without getting off. Gives a good orientation. a feel for how crowded some of the sites might be and some background information. On the second time around we get off to visit the ones we are most interested in seeing. In some cities the tickets are good for 24 hours. Buy noon one day and use it till noon the following day as transportation between sites, I would try that for Rome

Amy,

When we went to see the Coloseum there were some college tour guides outside offering tours of the Coloseum and the Forum. It was 10 euro's and they were great, funny and informative.
