Rome to Venice.. Suggestions

Hello All!

I have finally booked my plane tickets to Italy!

We are going Oct 12-22. Flying into Rome and flying out from Rome. We will be going to Venice, then Florence, and back to Rome. I have a few questions and would appreciate any suggestions:

  1. We arrive in Rome at 1240 PM. We thought about taking a train right to Venice. What time should I buy the train tickets for?

  2. Suggestions for hotels/ lodging in Venice?

  3. Suggestions for restaurants in Venice?

  4. Places to stay in Florence?

  5. Places to eat in Florence?

  6. We really want to go on a wine tour. Any recommendations for the best Tuscany wine tours?

Thanks!

1) It's never advisable to book train tickets for the day you arrive. If your flight is delayed some tickets become worthless and other have a very strict time limit for changes. Just book your tickets to Venice once you collect your luggage and are through customs/immigration. The most you will pay is the base price.

2 and 4 ) what is your budget?

I like to walk around looking for restaurants. Most will have a menu posted outside. I go several blocks from the main tourist areas to find places to eat.

Donna,

I would like to not spend more than 300$ per night.

Are there any specific restaurants that stood out to you?

  1. Agree with PP. Buy your Venice ticket once you've arrived in Rome.

2-5. Answers to these questions have been covered extensively in the Rick Steves guide books and in previous threads on this forum. The search function may be a bit idiosyncratic, but it usually does the job. Booking.com has a series of filters that helps to refine hotel searches. And both TripAdvisor and yelp work for restaurant reviews, if used with a critical eye.
