Rome to venice

Hi , I'm going to Italy in September, I'm wondering if I land in Rome at 9:40 am, and need to catch a flight to Venice at 12;30pm, will I have enough time to go through customs, get my bags and then check into next flight? Or is taking the train better? Thanks! KRod

It is a coin flip. Three hours should be enough to clear immigration. The delay can be with immigration. Customs is a walk through. Since you are at the airport it makes sense to fly. The advantage to the train is that is nearly hour so you can go fairly soon after you arrive but it is still a train ride to Termini and then a train to Venice. The train ends at the Grand Canal with the plane you will need to use public transit to get to the center of Venice. I would be tempted to fly.

If you take the train then purchase a ticket all the way to Venezia San Lucia - not Venezia Mestre which is on the mainland.

The reason I would not elect flying is that you NEVER know when your flight will land. Will it be delayed 30 minutes, 1 hour, 3 hours? Will you be bumped from your original flight rerouted with totally different times. Personally - there are just too many variables in landing times.

Even though the time might be close between rail or flying, my preference would be to take one of the high speed trains, which travel at up to 300 km/h. It will be a much more relaxing trip and you won't have to worry about restrictive luggage limits or extra charges imposed by the European airline. Keep in mind that once you arrive at VCE, you still have to get into Venice and then take a Vaporetto or whatever to your hotel.

Agreed, you never know what can delay a flight...the best way to arrive in Venice is by train anyway..flying in is a schlep..just make sure that you adhere to the recommended safety/ money valuables procedures..you could possibly fall asleep on the train ride...Enjoy! It is my favorite time of year in Italy....and I will be in Rome and Capri this Sept. as well.

Thanks so much for all the tips! I looked into both, train is 110 and flight is 90 with bags included! Another question, should we stay in almafi or postiano? Thanks everyone!! KRod

Positano can be very crowded, even in September. Amalfi is a bit less charming than Positano. I would stay in Praiano, about halfway between the two, or Minori, which has a ferry to most of the other towns on the coast (as do Amalfi and Positano, but Praiano is only reached by bus, I think).

Hi, I stayed in Positano at the Royal Hotel Prisco, very nice family run hotel! It is not as high up as others, so easy to get around anywhere and great views! That time of year the ferry runs to Amalfi. ( ends in Oct.)

I like Positano becausehere is always a nice stroll to take, you can still swim. Lot's of shops and a little art fair to explore of course. Getting to other towns is easy from there. If you have 2 nights that will be enough to enjoy. In early to mid-Sept. it will be crowded, I recommend touring other towns early and hit the beach after lunch at least one day...or if you want a different exprience with a free 10 minute boat ride up the coast, great views of course....try this...

There is a little beach club/restaurant called Da Adolfo, just ask at your hotel...you may want to reserve a spot on the early boat, 11 am I think...the free shuttle motor boat in the port has a red fish on it, you cannot miss it! Go for a swim, lunch and head back to town for sunset, good food and a special time away from massive crowds. You can change in a small cabanna & rinse off in the outdoor shower. The AC water is rocky and slippery, bring cheap flat water shoes or you will never get in and out of the water!
