Rome to Venice

We can use our air miles from U.S. to Rome but not to Venice. Our cruise leaves from Venice and ends in Rome. We can buy a connecting flight from Rome to Venice to complete the trip with no hassles. That makes sense to me but friends say to take the train. Any thoughts? Thank you.

Cheryl, I'd also suggest taking the train, for the same reasons that Michael mentioned. It will likely be a much more pleasant trip, although possibly a challenge to stay awake after a long international flight. Happy travels!

In this case, the train is faster then the flight. $ is about the same.

The fast train takes 3:48 to get from Rome to Venice, at a 1st class full fare of 104E v. 2nd class full fare at 76E. These fares are elegible for the MINI discount, so you could end up paying a good bit less than that, if you buy your tickets in advance. If your flight is late, though, and you miss that train, you're out of luck.. More on the MINI discount here. Personally I'd rather take the train because it's much more scenic and you have so much more room. Plus no security hassles.

For once I am going to disagree with convention wisdom. If you were spending a few days in Rome and then going to Venice it would make a lot of sense to take the train. However, since you are already at the airport, it is convenient and faster to take a plane to Venice unless you would have an unusually long layover. While the train from Rome to Venice is about 4 hours, you do need to add a couple of hours to get to Termini and find you train to Venice. Did you try to get open jaw tickets? Perhaps into Milan and home from Rome. The one serious drawback to flying to Venice is that you are running on two different tickets and should you be delay enough to miss the Venice flight then you would be out that ticket. Another consideration.
