Four of us will be traveling to Rome in the fall. We would like to also see the Alps via the Bernina Express (from Tirano to Chur, Switzerland). How many days should we allow for this? And would it be faster to rent a car from Rome to Tirano than taking a train? We will be in Italy for 10 days. My thoughts were to fly into Rome and get settled in our rental house and then take the trip north. Would it make more sense to fly into Milan and head right to Tirano from there instead? Thank you for your help!
what are you doing after Chur?
We are headed back to Rome for the remainder of the time.
back retracing your steps to Tirano? Or exploring Switzerland on the way?
You can get to Milan faster by train than either by car or plane. But do keep an eye out for what date in the Fall. The Milan-Tirano rail line is under repair until mid September.
Pontresina, about half way between Tirano and Chur is in the Alps, so staying there for a few days will get you better views.
Thank you! That is very helpful!
After taking the Bernina Express we plan on heading straight back to Rome - due to our rather short trip (10 days total). So I am just wondering.....would three days be enough to go to up to Chur and back down to Rome? Or would it make more sense to add on more days? We really just wanted to get a quick glimpse of what it is like in Switzerland and spend most of our trip in Rome, while still making the trip to Switzerland enjoyable and not rushed.
Sorry Sam, I reread your answer and I see that you mentioned staying in Pontresina for a few days would be a good idea. I will look into that. Thank you for your help!!
