Rome to the Amalfi Coast

I've been researching doing a day trip from Rome to the Amalfi Coast. I know it's a lot to do in one day, but wanted suggestions from this group on best options to get there and which places to prioritize. We can leave Pompeii off the list.

Just curious in your research which options do you see on how to get there?
Some options to get there are not possible depending on when you are planning to go.

My favorite cities were Ravella and Amalfi. You could look for transporation to get you from Rome directly to Amalfi. From Rome, I think it would take you at least 3 hours. Sorrento is closer and is a bigger city, but I honestly did not find it as interesting.

Make friends with Capt. Kirk and borrow the use of the NCC 1701 Transporter.

On a more practical note, a private plane/helicopter charter may work.

What you propose is extremely impractical. You may be able to put together a way to get there and back in one day, but you are more likely to report 'we survived it', not 'we enjoyed it'.

It’s quite far.
If the ferries are running you could try train to Salerno, early am 2 hours or so, then ferry to Amalfi. If days are long could possibly visit Amalfi and Ravello then ferry back to Salerno for late train to Rome
Not something I would attempt and for such a long day/ short visit not worth it.

Or look into a private tour, going to cost.

It’s simply not worth it. Under the most optimistic circumstances, you’re swimming against the current. Most of your day would be spent in some sort of transport. Especially in this area, travel times expand beyond what’s on paper. Boil down what you think you want to “see” on the Amalfi Coast and you’ll find you’re spending a great deal of time and effort for little reward. Promise yourself you’ll make this area your primary destination next time, because you could easily spend a week there.

Erica, looking at your previous posts, it looks like you have 8 days (uncertain if those include arrival/departure days), are flying into Venice (from Berlin) and out of Rome, and this trip will be end of March/beginning of April? You are also trying to do Venice, Florence and Rome in those 8 days.

Honestly, I wouldn't take an entire day from Rome to do this, and personally wouldn't do the A.C. as a day trip from Rome even if you had more time. You're going to spend the majority of the day dealing with transit, and ferries will not be running end of March. Weather will also be a crapshoot so I sure wouldn't commit to, say, an escorted tour that could end up scheduled on a less-than-enjoyable rainy day. Shoot, a lot of those tours take over 3 hours just to get there, another 3 hours back to Rome, and a big chunk of the hours in between on the bus.

There's enough to see in that region to fill the better part of a week so I'd save it for a future trip. IMHO, Rome takes 4 nights/3 full days just to scratch the surface so best not to short it for a rushed look at the coast. If still determined to make this trip, I'd probably take a train to Salerno (minimum of 90 minutes, depending on what trains/combo of trains you choose) and then SITA buses to Amalfi, Positano and Sorrento. Train back to Rome from Sorrento (Circumvesuviana from Sorrento >Napoli Centrale/Garibaldi: 1 hour, and then Trenitalia or Italo from Napoli Centrale >Rome: minimum 80 minutes depending on choice of trains.)
