My adult sons and I flying into Rome for three night and want to continue up to Switzerland ( never been) for 3-4 days before dropping my son off at a study abroad in Milan. Is this doable with the fast trains and where are some must see places if we can only pick one or two?
I will let the Swiss experts suggest possible places to visit besides Luzern or Lauterbrunnen/Wegen. Just realize that getting there and back will be at least 6+ hours each way and involve multiple trains and possibly a mountain railway or gondola.
When is the trip? Italy-Switzerland train schedules are not finalized on some routes after June 14.
Mid May. Also considering staying in Varenna area and taking day trips from there?).
That is certainly doable with a train to Tirano and then regional train from Tirano to Pontresina. Don't waste money on the fancy Bernina Express trains. You can hop on and off the regional trains since a ticket is good in that direction all day.
