Rome to Sperlonga (day trip): travel time discrepancy

I have read estimates for train travel between Rome Termini and Fondi-Sperlonga Station as between one hour-fifteen minutes and over two hours each way. Does anyone have experience doing a day trip to Sperlonga? If so, what was the travel time? What did you think of the town? The beach? We'd be visiting for the day in the third week of June, two adults and a six year-old.

You can look up the specific times at Trenitalia.com. It looks like most trains are around an hour and several don’t require a train connection, but I see one option for 1 hour 45 minutes.

Sperlonga has a nice beach and a pretty historical centre, I went by car and it was a very pleasant day trip even if we were unlucky with the weather.
But looking at Google maps it looks like you have to get the train to Formia and then the bus to Sperlonga, which makes it too long a journey as a day trip. If you get the train to Formia you could then take the same bus but get off in Gaeta, which is nearer and very pretty.

Look at Google maps. Fondi-Sperlonga station is not in Sperlonga, it's in Fondi!!

Yes, I am aware that the train from Rome stops in Fondi!!! I just didn't include the dogleg. Once off the train you catch a bus just outside the station (typically timed for the arrival of the train) and it is 12 km to Sperlonga. The bus stops in the lower town and then up top in the old town. I haven't yet learned what the bus number is, so if anybody knows. 12 km oughtn't to take that long, though again I don't know how many stops between. I am hoping to get anyone's experiencing of taking public transit to the town, but also what you remember best about the town.
