My husband are doing the Best of Italy tour in June 2008 (our 1st trip to Europe). We end in Rome and we decided (with the help of everyone's suggestion from the message board) to spend a few extra days in Sorrento before heading home. We will be traveling by train. We definitely want to see Pompeii during our trip, so in order to make the best use of our time, I was hoping we could visit Pompeii on our way to Sorrento. I am worried about having our bags with us. Any suggestions on what we can do? Thanks in advance for your help!
At the entrance complex, there may well be someplace to hold your bags, but I agree with Kent, it is worth waiting until the next day, hit Pompeii then head into Naples and do the museum to make it complete. With a short walk and pizza in Naples, you will get back to Sorrento about mid afternoon.
We did Pompeii on our way from Rome to Sorrento last fall. You can store your bags at the station for a couple of Euros while you tour Pompeii.
Thanks Steve. How safe is it?
Just did Italy in October. Started and finished in Rome. End of the trip was two nights in Sorrento, it was beautiful! On the way back to Rome for our last night, stopped at Pompeii, luggage in hand. Walked 2 minutes to the entrance, left our luggage at Pompeii for free. Spent three hours there, picked up luggage, trained to Naples, trained to Rome. No problems.
We took the Circumvisuviana train from Sorrento to Naples, stopping in Pompeii with our luggage. Two flights down, under the tracks, and two flights up to the train office.Same thing to go on to Naples. If you stop with luggage on the way to Sorrento you avoid the hauling. Consider eating at Antica Traitoria in Sorrento!
My husband and I just returned from our Italy vacation. I would take the train from Rome to Sorrento and enjoy Sorrento on the first day. Pompeii is a full-day excursion. Most hotels offer tours or you could do what we did - take the "circumventing" train that runs from Sorrento back to Naples with a stop right outside the gate of Pompeii. If I remember correctly the cost of the 1/2 hour ride was around 2 euros round-trip and it ran every half hour. The train station is right in Sorrento and within walking distance from town hotels. Enjoy!
Does anyone have a recommendation for a cost-effective but nice place to stay in Sorrento? Also, is it better to take the train or a bus from Rome to Sorrento? Thanks!
I agree with Frances - go directly to Sorrento and do Pompeii as a day trip. It's only 1/2 hour by train from Sorrento (and I believe we paid 3 euro for a round-trip ticket) and it really takes the better part of a day to see - much bigger than you might expect! We did what Frances recommends and spent our check-in day looking around Sorrento, and then took the next day to see Pompeii. If you have a third day, take the ferry to Positano or Amalfi - beautiful!
the bus is faster (direct) from Rome to Sorrento
