I am a first time poster and discovered this site yesterday and am totally addicted. There are 4 adults doing a last minute trip in 3 weeks and I am feeling very overwhelmed with details as the trip planner. We are planning on spending three days in Rome and then the next 4 in Sorrento as a base for Amalfi, Pompeii etc. I see that it is very easy to take the train from Rome, stop in Pompeii on the way to Sorrento and stow luggage and then continue on. Would all you experts out there recommend that we take the train and then use local buses etc from Sorrento to explore the area or rent a car when we are leaving Rome and drive directly to Sorrento? Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
I recommend using public transportation, which is inexpensive, fairly reliable, frequent, and relatively hassle-free. No need to worry about parking, traffic delays, etc. Here are the sites to research: www.ferroviedellostato.it (Trenitalia trains to Naples); www.vesuviana.it (Circumvesuviana commuter trains between Naples/Pompei Scavi/Sorrento); www.sitabus.it (SITA buses along the Amalfi Coast). Consider purchasing the UNICO CAMPANIA 3 T tourist ticket for 20 Euros, which gives you free transportation for 3 days on the Circumvesuviana trains, SITA buses in Campania (including along the Amalfi Coast), Naples, Sorrento and Salerno city buses, buses to Mt. Vesuvius, CSTP buses between Salerno and Paestum, Naples underground subway and funiculars, and more. www.unicocampania.it; If you plan on visiting museums or archeological sites, the Campania Artecard (and in particular the 3-day "tutta la regione" card for 27 Euros), will give you free access to two sites, a 50% reduction on additional sites, plus all the free transportation for 3 days of the UNICO CAMPANIA 3 T tourist ticket described above. www.artecard.it; You can purchase either the UNICO CAMPANIA 3-day ticket of the Artecards as soon as you arrive in Naples at the Napoli Centrale train station, then start using it to reach Sorrento on the Circumvesuviana train. Or you can wait a day before starting to use the ticket or Artecard, if it makes more sense to do so, based on your itinerary.
Definitely do not drive! Public transport is good and there is virtually no parking spaces anywhere in Sorrento.
