Any recommendations appreciated: what's the best transportation from the Rome airport to Sorrento or Positano and back to Rome, train, bus? Private car would be too expensive. And, is Positano better than Sorrento? Thanks.
Have only taken train to Sorrento. Don't know about bus. Train you can take to Naples and then transfer to local train to Sorrento. We loved Positano but that said, there is not much to do there. You could use Sorrento as a base and take day trip down coast to Amalfi, Positano or whatever and another day trip by train to Pompeii.
Dan, The method I'd use on that route is Leonardo Express from FCO to Roma Termini, ES / AV from Rome to Naples and then Circumvesuviana from Naples to Sorrento (and the same arrangement for the trip back to Rome). All of those are trains. Sorrento and Positano are both awesome, but without further information on what you're looking for, it's hard to suggest one over the other. You might have a look at the Italy Guidebook to get some sense of the "character" of both towns. Sorrento is a much more convenient "home base" for touring that area, as it has rail access whereas Positano is only accessible by Bus. Sorrento is a larger town, so has more Hotels and other facilities. It's also more convenient for touring to Pompeii, Herculaneum and Vesuvius. For rail travel times between various locations, use the Trenitalia website. For information on rail trips from Naples to Sorrento, use the Circumvesuviana website (it's a separate rail line). Cheers!
Dan, We just came back 2 weeks ago. This is just my opinion and might differ from others. From Rome , We took Curreri Bus
to Sorrento. We chose it over the train so we don't have to lug our luggages as We need to change train in Naples. You can't prebook with Curreri. We got our ticket at the Tiburtina station. I think it was 18 euro one way. It was a comfortable ride. We stayed in Sorrento based on the advices here . Sorrento is a perfect home base. Transportation to Pompeii, Positano, Capri and Amalfi is so convenient. If you go to Capri, do consider taking the bus to Anacapri then the chairlift. It was fun.
Thank you everyone for the replies to my questions, it really does help!
Sally, how long was the bus ride from Rome to Sorrento? Thanks.
Go to curreriviaggi,it, it is 3 hours and 30 minutes.
Thank you! Any recommendations of hotels in Sorrento would also be appreciate.
