Rome to Sorrento

What is the best way to get from Rome's airport to Sorrento with a half day layover in Naples?
We will be traveling for 18 days in Italy. Is there a train pass that you would advise us to buy that can get us from Rome to Sorrento and back and also from Rome to Venice, Venice to Florence and Florence back to Rome?

Not really. Train fares in Italy are very cheap and it hard to make a pass pay especially if you can take advantage of the deep discounts available for advance purchase. From the airport you take the Leonard Express to Termini and a train from Termini to Naples.

Spend as much time as you like in Naples and then take a private commuter train, Circumvesuvianna, to Sorrento. A pass would not cover the Circumvesuvianna train. Reverse to Rome. Get the train schedules at trenitalia.com. If you haven't booked your flight, you should consider an open jaw/multi-city ticket. Into Venice and home from Rome. Probably cheaper and give you more sightseeing time.

Have you changed your plans? This schedule is different from what you posted yesterday.

As Frank mentioned, the easiest (best?) way from Rome to Sorrento is.....

  • Leonardo Express from FCO to Roma Termini
  • Freccia or Italo train from Termini to Napoli Centrale
  • Circumvesuviana or Campania Express from Napoli to Sorrento (the Campania Express only operates during peak season).

You could also use a private car service from Naples to Sorrento, depending on your budget. If you're planning to stop for a few hours in Naples, there is a Deposito Bagagli at Napoli Centrale. Be sure to allow some extra time for leaving and retrieving luggage, as there can sometimes be queues.
