We're going to be in Rome in early July and have 3.5days there. This is our second trip to Rome (though the first one was quite short)and we are not interested in too much sightseeing...I was wondering if a day trip to Sorrento is worhtwhile in terms of the amount of time and effort it will take to get there esp given the July heat in Southern Italy...
It's doable, but considering the heat and crowd, not my choice. For daytrip idea from Rome. Go to www.roninrome.com.
Doable. Rome to Naples on the high-speed ES-Alta Velocita takes 80 minutes and costs 39.90 Euro ($56). The slower Regionale train takes 2.5hrs and costs 10.50Euro. Same tracks - different class of trains. At the Naples-Garabaldi train station, you go downstairs and take the private Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento. This journey will take about an hour. Overall, you are looking at 5.0hrs-7.0hrs of round trip train travel depending on which train you take from Rome to Naples.
Don't bother. We just spent 3 wasted, rainy days there. The traffic is worse than worse, crowds were impossible with HUGE travel buses everywhere. Italians unfriendly, unhelpful & too busy to bother with tourists.....Food..blah!
