What is the easiest way to get to Sorrento from Rome? Train to Naples and take a Bus or Taxi?
Definitely train Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale.
Then, as posted in other threads, to get from Naples to Sorrento you have the choice of the Circumvesuviana commuter train (cheapest, runs most often--about 6 Euro), the Campania Express train (next cheapest, supposedly somewhat 'classier', about 18 Euro, only 4-5 runs a day), or a private driver (or taxi) door-to-door usually set up by wherever you're staying in Sorrento (easiest, but can cost between 70-100 Euro per car).
There is also the option of going from the Centrale station to the Molo Beverello (Beverello pier) and taking a ferry/hydrofoil. Although that involves some extra steps and chances in mode of transportation, some people prefer it and find it more relaxing.
Personally, I find the Marozzi bus to be the "easiest" way to get to Sorrento from Rome. It leaves from the bus station near Tiburtina train station (can take metro there), takes about 4 hrs with a few stops along the way. One brief stop is made enroute at a rest area. The bus takes you right into Sorrento and drops passengers off near the Circumvesuviana train station. For me this is preferable to having to change trains in Naples, especially with luggage, then taking the Circumvesuviana or a ferry. The train from Rome to Naples may be fast, but it probably all balances out in the end. Here's a link: https://www.marozzivt.it/home
Have a great trip, whatever you decide to do.
Thanks folks. What is the time difference for high speed vs Regional on the Rome to Naples leg?
Jim, it depends on what train you take. High-speed trains take an hour + a few odd minutes, and regionales vary from 3 hours + one station change to 2 hours, 45 minutes. Intercity trains fall in the middle at around 2 hours+ a few odd minutes.
I would recommend the bus. No changes in equipment and frankly, the train station in Naples is a little sketchy.
Here's the Circumvesuviana schedule, if interested. Lots of trains:

And here is the Campania Express schedule:

This is a good choice if you can make one of its few runs work for you.
Editing to add: "A" is "Arrivo" (arrival), and "P" is "Partenze" (departure). You'd want to get on at Napoli P. Garibaldi, which is connected to Napoli Centrale.
excellent responses thank you all. This is a solo trip for my wife who is going to meet a Italian friend we met years ago. I will be back with her in the fall. She is a artist and I thought this was something she needed to do on her own. Obviously I want her to be safe. We only live once ...this one is for her

The train station has been modernized recently and it looks totally fine...I'm thinking this comment is a few years old? I used the station as a 20-some year old solo traveler in 2004 and I don't remember having any issues.
Maybe I should post a new topic but this fits in.Leaving from Sorrento to Rome - understand how to get from Sorrento to Naples but wondering if the high speed train from Naples to Rome needs reservations before hand ? What about the slower train ?
kathyknapp5006,, see responses under the thread you started.
We did this trip last summer and we took the fast train (Reserved ahead of time) from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale. Then we took the Campania Express to Sorrento (Buy tickets at the Napoli Centrale train station). When you get off the train there should be an information or tourist office (TI) where you can find the schedule for the Campania Express without having to go all the way downstairs to the actual window. They do run only every few hours. We found a train that left in four hours and used that time to go to Da Michele to grab some Pizza and it was worth it. We stored our luggage at the Napoli train station.
About a half hour before the Campania Express boarded we found the window to purchase our tickets and were told to wait for our guide. Two women dressed alike in uniforms guided the group to the platform on the side (not the one in the middle for the regional train). We boarded the train (all 12 of us) and proceeded to pick up passengers at Pompeii with each person carefully checked to make sure they had a Campania ticket.
I agree that the Naples train station is sketch. I hardly ever feel nervous (scared, uncomfortable, anxious?) when I travel, and I had a strong sense of danger (third eye?) at that train station that I did not feel anywhere else . It had a vibe to it that made me more diligent with keeping my eye on my purse and watching out for people getting too close, hubby felt it too. I listen to that gut even if I appear silly. It has served me well in different situations were I wish I was not right.
