We will be traveling from Rome (FCO) to Sorrento, and then back to Rome, next March with 5 adults. We are trying to budget and consider different travel options, such as train, bus, private car, etc. Any experience on travel costs for this leg of the trip would be appreciated. Thanks.
no question a private car is the answer espec with 5 adults and luggage. I have done this by train and it takes time has transfers and for 5 not convenient.
Rick has in his guidebk recoms Umberto Benvenuto for excursions Rome, Naples, Pompeii etc. looks like it is 300 kms and takes 210 min driving time but it would be guided, nice option.www.taxibenvenuto.com
hope this helps.
I think a car would be nice in Sorrento to drive along the Amalfi coast and stop in the small towns along the way. You should investigate taking a train from Rome to Naples, then picking up a rental car there for the drive to Sorrento and for use during your stay.
You have a lot of options here. If you don't need a car in Sorrento (planning on taking buses along the Amalfi coast, ferries along the coast or to Capri, or a car tour with a driver) then from Naples you can take either a ferry or the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento. We took the train, used buses along the coast, it was fine.
As for cost, Rome -> Napoli is about 33E one way, Circumvesuviana is 3E. You can look up ferry costs, etc. online.
A lot depends on your group dynamics. Have you all traveled together before? The problem with 5 adults and 1 car is that you may have 3 different ideas of how to spend the time, and with one car you all have to agree.
