Rome to Sorrento by Train

Four adults traveling to Sorrento from Rome, on Sept 29. What is the best train system? Our hotel is just a few blocks from Termini. First class etc. Do we have to change trains? Any advise is greatly appreciated. Thanks,
Lorie

You take the high speed Trenitalia Frecciarossa from Termini OR the high speed Italo from Tiburtina station to Naples. Then catch the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento. The CV is one floor below where you arrive from Rome. Rick Steves explains this well in his guidebooks. IF you buy in advance like NOW you can get some very good discounts on either train system: Trenitalia or Italo. And yes, I think 1st class is worth it if you can get a good advance fare, but 2nd class is perfectly comfortable. You cannot buy in advance for the CV, It's a local.

lorie, The easiest way to get from Rome to Sorrento is to travel by Freccia high speed train from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale. When you arrive in Naples, walk downstairs and buy tickets on the Circumvesuviana train, which will take you to Sorrento. You might find it helpful to watch this video, which shows how to travel by rail from Rome to Pompeii. Sorrento is the last stop on the line that goes past Pompeii, so the travel information is the same. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wb7-_6zQ6Hg I often turn the sound DOWN with this video, as the music is somewhat annoying. Happy travels!

Lorie, from Naples you can also rent a car to take you to Sorrento. We booked ours through our hotel. It was a fabulous decision. The driver met us at the train station in Naples. He stopped along the way to Sorrento to allow us to sight see. He was knowledgable of the area and gave commentary as we drove. I highly recommend that you look into option.
