Rome to Sorrento by bus

Any advice on taking a bus (Marozzi from Tiburtina station in Rome) to Sorrento? Can you get tickets in advance? Is this better than the train - we want to avoid Naples and the local train there. I am traveling 10/15 and would love some advice - it is a good way to go? Do I need tickets in advance? Thanks.

Hi Diane - As you can see, the Marozzi bus runs Rome to Sorrento ONLY through September 30th - I know some will find fault with this advice but I have taken the train to Napoli and then the Hydrofoil to Sorrento , which is ABSOLUTELY beautiful coming into the Marina. I don't believe you'd be making any more changes, even if the bus were still running in October. And it's quicker!

Whatever you decide enjoy Sorrento and, Please, Have a Lemoncello for me. In fact Villa Massa, the largest producer of Lemoncello, with over 16,000 lemon trees is a very short distance out of Sorrento, and beautiful to see.
Also, I hope you have time to take The Sita bus from the main square of Sorrento to Positano. Sit on the right side and be amazed!

Ciao, Greg

Marozzi continues its direct bus service from Roma Tiburina to Sorrento at 15:00 Monday through Saturday, and at 7:00 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, even beyond September 30.

Competitor Curreri also has a year-round bus from Roma Tiburtina to Sorrento daily except Sunday at 14:00.

The primary advantage of taking the bus to Sorrento is that you avoid having to connect at Naples Centrale to the Circumvesuviana light rail (or to the hydrofoil as Greg suggests). Another advantage is that it's easier to load heavy luggage into the underfloor compartment of the bus than to lift it onto the train. Otherwise, you don't save any time with the bus: indeed it's a scheduled 3.5 to 4 hour trip!!!

Buy your ticket when you arrive at the Roma Tiburtina station. Don't worry about getting advance reservations this late in the season.

The direct bus to Sorrento is a perfectly fine alternative to the train.

Diane, a few years ago I was in Sorrento for 3 months. I went back and forth to Rome, meeting relatives who wanted to come visit me in Sorrento. At times I took the train, which is easy, but it is a hassle changing in Naples to another train to Rome. The bus (I am not sure if it was Marozzi or the other one)was a breeze! I just sat back, relaxed and enjoyed the ride. This was in the winter months and the bus ran on schedule daily. The bus drops you off in the center of Sorrento and it departs there also. It was never crowded. I loved it!

I just took the bus from Rome to Sorrento on October 12. It is assigned seating , so do look for that on your ticket. It was fairly empty and it does stop half way to use the bathroom. You can also buy food if you hurry. If I had seen things marked more clearly about the departure parking spots I would've felt better, but it all went smoothly and a nice ride. If you have heavy bags it's definitely a plus. Also, taxi from Tiburtini to hotel in rome can be expensive,17 euro, and beware some drivers will try to charge you extra for your bags. we did not pay for that.Only one departure from Sorrento to Rome, 6am.
