I'm guessing that the answer is "NO". But in case I am wrong... is it possible to make a day trip to Sorrento from Rome?

While it's technically feasible, that's a LONG day trip from Rome. You'd need to take the regular train to Napoli Centrale, and then transfer to the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento. I don't recall the exact times, but the trip would probably be about 3 - 4 hours each way (including times waiting for trains).
If you have the time, I'd highly recommend spending a night or two in Sorrento - it's a fantastic spot!

You can do it but it would be a long day. I was just there a month ago and we left Rome at 6:30am and got to Naples around 8:30. The the train from Naples to Sorrento is another hour. So you are looking at around 3 to 3-1/2 hours each way. If you are going to make the trip I would say go to Pompeii instead of Sorrento if you haven't been there yet.
