Rome to Sienna; Bus or Train?

I have looked at train schedules and looks like I have to go through Florence first. Do you know if there is a direct train or should I look at buses? Thanks

There are no direct trains and you need to make one change. I would stick to the trains as it will be faster and more comfortable. I looked at couple of schedule, all the trains do not go through Florence. The fastest route is through Chiusi. But changing trains is not a major issue. I am not sure you could get a direct bus either.

A few of the trains via Chiusi change to a bus to Siena rather than a train, but it's no big deal. If Chiusi to Siena is on a bus, just walk out the front of the station and the bus will likely be just to your right. I've taken that train/bus route and it worked just fine, although it does take a little bit longer than the train.

Some people prefer the bus from Tiburtina to Siena, and I suspect one of them will post their experience.

We took the bus from Siena to Rome. It was very convenient, faster than the train, and relatively comfortable. The bus station in Siena is right downtown.

Donna K, Was it direct, or did you have to change? We're going from Rome to Siena next year, so we're interested in this topic.

Just did this also. Bus is direct, and goes to the plaza in center of town, no having to get there the last couple miles from the train station. And bus takes no longer, I believe less time than the train -especially when you consider where it takes you to and the time saved at that end also.

Thanks, Larry That's probably the way we will go.

Do the buses have restrooms? We will be traveling with a 2 year old (and car seat) - wondering if bus is still best option with a toddler.

there is one toilet on the bus; the ride takes 2 hours 50 minutes;
so just make sure you go before you get on

I am also interested for more information on this route. Where did you catch the bus? How frequent?

We always enjoy the bus, although we take trains, too.

We do need to get from Naples to Rome, though, before catching the bus to Siena, but if I don't find what I need in the link given above, I'll start a new thread.

I'm a great fan of the bus, but were I having to get from Naples (I'm assuming this is one journey?) I would almost certainly get the fast train Naples to Florence, and change trains to Siena.

Rome to Florence by the fastest train is likely to be about 75-90 minutes. Allowing 30 minutes to change trains (there may be a direct Florence Siena Train, more likely you will need to change at Empoli) and an hour's journey , then trains are no quicker Rome to Siena - and you still need to get from the station up to the city centre.

Thanks,TimW. We still have plenty of time, so I'll be sure to check out trains as well as buses.
