Rome to Siena Train

Hello,

Looking into trains from Rome to Siena. Our cheapest option, and the most ideal time, for this route has a 6 minute connection in Chiusi-Chianciano Terme. Having once booked it through the Milan train station and quite literally nearly jumping on our train to Lucerne, I'm a little nervous about this connection, particularly given there will be four of us and we will, of course, have luggage.

Leaning toward the longer route at nearly twice the cost connecting in Florence (20 minutes) for peace of mind.

Any experience with the reliability of this particular train route?

Thanks!

Suppose you miss your connection in Chiusi-Chianciano Terme. When is the next regional train to Siena? At worst, you could catch the next one (you have up to four hours after the time of your original train to catch the next regional).

FYI, a bus into Siena might be easier than a train - I think the train station is further from the center of town (when I visited years ago, I took the Sita bus from Florence and it dropped me right at the edge of the old town).

The bus is definitely the way to go. It is large and comfortable and takes only 3 hours.

The above messages are both right.

In case you are a train addicted... Chiusi-Chianciano Terme is 10,000 times smaller than Milano Centrale. Why don't you just make 2 separate purchases if you want more time to change?

Buy a ticket from Rome to Chiusi-Chianciano Terme on trenitalia.com/tcom-en and note down the arrival time in Chiusi.
Then get a ticket from Chiusi-Chianciano Terme to Siena departing on the same day 30 minutes later or more. Wouldn't be easier than going up to Florence?

Even easier would be getting the ticket for the Chiusi-Chianciano Terme-Siena leg at the counter, but don't forget to time-stamp before getting on the 2nd train.

Future readers passing by: if you miss a connection because of trenitalia you are always protected, but when the 2nd train is a Freccia, an EC or an Intercity train you must get a new seat reservation for free at the counter before boarding.

Thank you, all! We are looking into the bus option as well as the booking of two tickets through Chiusi Chianciano Terme. I will be with my parents and just don't want to chance missing a connection or having to run. It'll be stressful for at least one of us. I've always just used trains, but if the bus isn't too cramped, and there's a bathroom on board, I am just as content on a bus!

I saw Flixbus, but the stops in Rome seem a little out of the way? Perhaps I am reading the map wrong, as I did look at it on my phone. I also saw the Sena bus? Is this a better option than Flixbus?

I don't see any need to buy two train tickets. If you miss the connection, you have four hours to get the second train (regional trains, which this surely is on to Siena). However, checking the Trenitalia site, I see that some of the connections from Chiusi-Chianciano Terme to Siena are in fact buses - run by Trenitalia? Can we assume you'd be able to catch the next bus from Chiusi-Chianciano Terme if you miss the train? I'm honestly not sure, but I'd guess so; the price is the same on the website, and you can buy it online from them.

And they don't run (trains or buses) constantly from Chiusi-Chianciano Terme to Siena. You might need to wait 90-120 minutes for the next one. Given that, I think I would try to time my connection at Chiusi-Chianciano Terme so the next train is an hour later, not more, so you won't have to wait so long if you miss it the original one.

However, I'd guess your chances of making the connection are good - your connecting train may even be on the same or adjacent platform, so you might not have to go very far to connect. Some of my tight train connections in Italy last year were like that. FYI, I found having the Trenit app on my phone very helpful; I could find out the platform of the next train ahead of time and not have to stress when I got off to try to figure that out in a rush. Trenit also shows train delays, and I found that some of my connecting trains were in fact delayed too, so I could relax a bit when changing trains, knowing the next one was a little late.

Search this website for: Flixbus Siena Rome --- you'll see lots of information about this far easier and quicker way. And yes, there is a bathroom on the bus.

We just got back from Italy and ran into the very issue that you highlighted--train was 30 minutes late out of Siena and we had an 11 minute connection time. Our only saving grace was that the train to Rome from Chiusi-Chianciano was also late and we had 2 minutes to sprint to the train. With six people (two who have mobility issues), it was stressful. The next connection was two hours away.

If I had to do it over again, I would have considered taking the bus as suggested in some of the other posts.

Thank you, Sandy!

This is definitely my concern. After checking the next train out of Chiusi-Chianciano Terme, I discovered we would be there for a couple of hours. We then considered renting a car in Rome rather than Siena a couple days later, but decided we'd rather not have to deal with traffic. We are planning to take a bus!
