Rome to Sicily Flights

Hi to all, 1st to post. Seen a lot of wealth of INFO from all with this forum, thanks to everybody.

Anyway, my wife and I are looking at some options for this OCT. Thinking of choosing between Sicily or Naples before the departure flight from Rome.

Our plans so far are arriving in Rome from a cruise, taking the train to Forence for a few days. Returning to Rome for some sightseeing. I'm thinking of bypassing Rome from Florence. Travelling directly to Naples or Sicily. Thereafter, finishing with Rome for some days of sightseeing.

I have 7 full days not counting travel days between cities.

The train to Naples looks easy, providing lots of options to explore Naples and surrounding area.

Since i have 7 days, maybe spending those days in Sicily would be a better option? Kind of always wanted to visit Sicily. Lots to see.

One of the items that looks complicating, flights within Italy. Might not be a big thing. 1st to us. My concern is mainly reserving/purchasing tickets, baggage and transportation from the train station to the airport. It looks like I could work out the airport transfers.

Anyway, looking for some experience as far as flying within Italy. Ticket/baggage handling, available airlines and general advice as far as things to consider while flying within Italy. Difficult to say, we are not light packers!

Any comments/suggestions would be great.

Thanks to all

Seven days is a very short time to spend in Sicily. I always recommend at least 14 days if you'll have a car and longer if you'll be depending on public transportation. With the time you have available, I'd recommend Naples and the area around the Amalfi Coast (including Pompeii, etc.). Alternatively, if you want something a bit more adventurours that fits better into a week (though extra days would be helpful), I'd suggest Puglia.

Don't get me wrong; I adore Sicily, but I had 17-18 days there (with no car) and I struggled to fit in what I wanted to see. It's a large island, and it's not like there's a single point where you could plunk yourselves down for a week and fan out over the entire island.

I agree. We had two and half weeks in Sicily which is needed. Your Naples plan is easier.
A note for future travels- booking flights within Europe is as easy as booking domestic US flights. Do not hesitate to do it on another trip.
Book a complete independent trip to Sicily next year! We loved all of it.

Thanks for the comments. Looking at Naples area now. Yes knew that Siciliy required more than 7 days to see the entire island. My thought was just to see primarily the southern west part and Palermo.

Thanks

Should you decide to use your time in Naples and the surrounding area, you might benefit from the 7-day Campania (regional) Artecard, which is currently priced at 34 euros per person: https://www.campaniartecard.it/?lang=en.

Details about what the cards cover are in this pamphlet: https://www.campaniartecard.it/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/06internobrochure_29aprile2021.pdf. See pages 23 and 24 for the English description of the 7-day Campania card.

The prices posted right now are holdovers from 2021, so I wouldn't be surprised to see an upward adjustment at some point.
