Rome to Sicily connecting flight

Hello,
I am trying to purchase tickets separately to save up some cost.
I will be arriving in Rome around 6:30pm and hopefully get on the vuelling going to Palermo at 8:00pm.
Since I am purchasing these tickets separately, I have to wait for my luggage, pick them up and then check in again at the vuelling counter.
Is this too much of rush?
There is also Ryan Air at 10pm arring in Palermo around 11:20pm. But i have pick up my rental car at the airport and aren't they all closed around that time?
or should I stay in Rome for a night and get going the next day?

I will take any other recommendations getting to Palermo from Rome.
thanks so much!

If the airline that's flying you to Rome offers a connection on their own or through partners, then their guarantee to get you onto the onward flight without baggage re-checking and regardless of flight delays is worth paying more. I haven't done such a transfer, but 90 minutes sounds like it would leave no room for error or delay.

I got pretty far on an autoeurope test booking for 11:30 p.m. pickup from Dollar rentals without seeing any warnings. Test it out. Europcar, Avis, Hertz, and Autoeuropa are also present at the airport.

You have to be checked in by 7.15 so that only gives you 45 minutes for luggage pick up. Very tight and doable PROVIDED your flight is on time. If it isn't, you have lost a ticket.
