Non-stop flights from Rome to Palermo or Catania take a little over an hour. You can use Ryanair, Vueling or Alitalia.

Whatever you do, don't take the night train. Incredibly uncomfortable because of constant side-to-side jerking. I guess the rail bed is not in great shape. Not a wink of sleep the entire night.
