Rome to Salerno and back.

Greetings!
I will be visiting Italy for 7 days in October. 22nd - 28th

Rome 22nd - 25th: a fairly packed itinerary
- Hotel is in the town center
- History, food and wandering abound
- Taking the train from Rome to Salerno on the morning/afternoon of the 25th
Salerno - 25th - 27th: more relaxation and touring the Amalfi coast
- AirBnb in Salerno
- Route back to Rome???
Then the 27th a stay back in Rome near FCO

I found good answers on the forum, but most are from posts well before COVID times so I am asking them again.

  1. AMALFI COAST: I want to see the coast and get a good sampling of leisure and food, but I also want to visit Scala. With Scala in the picture, should I go with the SITI bus or a private driver? (I have no clue what hiring a driver is like.)
  2. On the 27th I'm trying to decide between going along the coast to Sorrento or train from Salerno to Naples and the day there. I want to be back in Rome early evening.

Any tips would be great. I don't want to pack in more than I can enjoy on 25-27th.

If you still have the flexibility I would suggest you go to Salerno on your arrival day and do all the Rome days at the end.

Having to change lodging once rather than twice saves precious time on your short time there.

Either way taking the train from Naples is the easiest way to get back to Rome

Is everything booked? If not, and as long as your arrival is not late, you could head to Salerno first so you can put all your Rome time together and not waste any with that last night.
You can return to Rome via train from Salerno.
Check if the Travelmar ferries are running for your dates and then check SITA schedule to Scala from Amalfi. But you really only have one full day, so a hired driver would be worth the expense.

Travel between Salerno and Rome is easy by fast train. If you want to stop for several hours in Naples, there is luggage storage at the station.

You have 2 nights in Salerno so one full day (26th) to see the AC. Either hire a driver for the day to get the most out of the AC or take a taxi from Amalfi to Scala and back. If you get to Salerno early on the 25th you'd have time to take the bus and wander a couple of the AC villages or better yet, explore the historic center of Salerno.

Travel between Sorrento and Rome is not so straightforward. There's no train service to Sorrento, only the local Circumvesuviana (CV) which is really a metro that runs about every half hour (1 hour 15 minutes). Then you have to change to a train at Naples that goes to Rome. The CV is slow and often runs late so you need to allow lead time for the Naples transfer. Going from Salerno to Sorrento you'd need to take the SITA bus (with your luggage) to Amalfi (1 hour 15 minutes), then a SITA bus to Sorrento (1 hour 40 minutes). A lot of the route on the 2nd leg is inland. Trip times are best case. There can be delays.
