I could use some guidance. Our itinerary is Rome---Revello (Amalphi coast) 4 nights----Tuscany 5 nights----Orvieto 2 nights----Rome 1 night ----return from Rome.
We will have a car while in Tuscany and Orvieto. My dilemma is Should we rent a car at FCO and travel to Revello via car for 4 day and then to Tuscany or take the train and private driver To Revello and then train to Orvieto where would rent a car. We would then travel Tuscany and return the car in Orvieto and train to Rome for our last day.
I will be traveling with my 85 year old mother and am concerned about using the trains. Most people recommend train and private driver to Amalphi coast but am uncertain if this is best for her. We will be traveling in Mid October. Ferries may be closed. Will driving the AC at that time be as difficult as I have read about? Would you recommend a private driver or having my own car? Should I drop my car in Orvieto and train to Rome or drive and drop the car at FCO on my last day? Thank you for any guidance you can give.
I believe there is an easier way to drive to Ravello than along the Amalfi Coast. Yes, a car would be easier with an elderly woman than taking a train.
Only one night in Rome?
Will driving the AC at that time be as difficult as I have read about?
The road is fine, as are most roads in Italy ( generally better than their US counterparts) --- its the traffic that is the problem, but by your travel time the prime tourist crush season will be over
Sure hope you do not plan to take what is presumably an overnight flight from the west coast and drive from Rome to Ravello on your arrival.
Any possibility to fly into Naples and out of Rome and eliminate some of your backtracking?
Thank you for your thoughts. I had considered driving to Revello after our arrival but I think it would be just to much. Any thoughts on returning the car in Orvieto and training to Rome or driving to FCO and returning the car there? Also if anyone has any experience in the drive from Revello to Tuscany (Pienza) perhaps you could comment on weather this is best done in a car or by train. (We could pick the car up in Orvieto) Thank you again for your help.
