Rome to Praiano

I am traveling from Rome on June 26 and will be staying in Praiano. Is it better to take train to Salerno or Sorrento? And do I have to change trains in Naples? I’m very confused.

I think Salerno would be easier and it would give you a chance to see more of the Amalfi coast.
Take the train to Salerno (many fast trains go from Rome to Salerno with no change required in Naples).

Then from Salerno you can take a bus to Praiano (you will need to change bus in Amalfi however).

You could take also a ferry from Salerno to Positano, then backtrack a bit to Praiano by bus or also from Salerno to Amalfi then proceed to Praiano by bus. Praiano is between Amalfi and Positano, but there is no dock so the ferry stops only in Amalfi or Positano. The boat option would probably be the most scenic.

do I have to change

To Salerno: It depends on the hour of departure you pick, check on trenitalia's search results page.

To Sorrento: Yes, you have to go downstairs at Napoli Centrale and take the local EAV (aka Circumvesuviana) train.

Just be aware it is a true uphill walk from the dock in Positano up to the bus and I seem to remember it is mostly cobblestone. Something to think about if you have luggage.

While you’re there, be sure to get out on the water either on a ferry or a boat to see the Amalfi Coast from the ocean. Everyone tells me that’s the perspective they thought had the most spectacular views.
Happy Travels!
