Rome to Positano transprotation

What is the best way to go from Rome to Positano? We are considering the train from Rome to Salerno , then ferry Salerno to Positano. Traveling in late May

Joe,

There are several options. One of the easiest methods is......

  • High speed train from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale
  • Circumvesuviana from Napoli Garibaldi (downstairs from Centrale) to Sorrento
  • Bus, Taxi or private car service to Positano

The Circumvesuviana can be a bit of a "zoo" at times, but it will get you to Sorrento. The easiest option if your budget allows, would be to arrange a private transfer from Napoli Centrale to Positano, perhaps with the Monetti Taxi listed in the guidebook.

Joe, it's possible to get there via ferry but you should have a back-up plan such as Ken has described. Positano's dock is not operational on stormy or very windy days when the sea is too choppy for landings. Even if the ferries are running to some other locations around the Sorrentine/Amalfi, it's sometimes possible that they have to bypass that one if weather conditions warrant.

They also do not run to Positano during the winter months (you don't mention when you're taking your trip).

If you go to Salerno with the hope of a boat, but can't get one, then there is of course SITA bus service from that direction, as well, but you have to change buses in Amalfi town. It's more convenient when your destination is Amalfi than when your destination is Positano.

Joe, I agree with what Ken mentioned about the idea of taking a taxi or car service from Napoli Centrale direct to your hotel in Positano. The cost should be somewhere around 100 euros. It is a nice time to splurge, rather than hassle with your baggage getting to and traveling on the Circumvesuviana, then transferring to a cab, ferry or bus to Positano, then perhaps to your hotel in hilly Positano. Of course the expense is even better when compared to transit tickets for two, three or four people than for one. When in that area in 2014, I took a cab from my B & B door in Napoli to my hotel door in Sorrento. I enjoyed a full morning and lunch in Napoli, got picked up at 2:00 pm, and was checking in at my hotel by 3:15 pm, then off to enjoy the late afternoon and evening in Sorrento.

Hi Joe,

My husband and I are taking our first trip to Italy this June. We are doing a Rick Steves tour, then traveling from Rome to Positano for the last leg of our stay. Based on other reviews, and the fact that we don't want any extra hassles or hiccups in our travel plans, we decided to take the high speed train to Naples, then a private transfer from the train station (Napoli Centrale) to our hotel in Postiano. Our hotel has arranged this for us and it will cost 130.00 for 2 people.

I know its a bit pricey, but this seems to be the fastest and least cumbersome option.

There's also a shared ride van called Positano Shuttle: positanoshuttle.com. It's 35 Euros per person. I don't think I'm going to use it for our ride from the Naples train station to Positano in April, though. It's tempting based on price, but the reviews of the company are pretty bad. There's two of us and the private car fare is 110 euros, which means it's 20 Euros each more for each of us and we get a nice, private ride.

Larry or Valerie, can either of you provide a link to the private car you will be using?

Lisa,

I'm not sure if this is the service the others are using, but you might have a look at Monetti Taxi (as I recall, it's listed in the Guidebook).

I'm using Aldo Limos. Their reviews are great on Tripadvisor and they've been extremely responsive and helpful in the email process. I actually ended up booking a roundtrip transfer with a two hour stop in Herculaneum. On our way in from Naples, the driver will stop and wait for us to tour the site. It seemed easier than using up one of our two relaxing Positano days to get there.

Thanks everyone. We have decided to do the train from Rome to Naples and private car from Naples to Positano.

Joe,

The private transfer from Naples to Positano should work well. Be sure to book the return trip as well.

Ken's right. We got a discount for booking roundtrip. The fare was 220 Euro instead of 240.
