rome to positano

Hello everyone, I am honoured to be here .
we would like to travel from Room to Positano in the first week of July 2026.
We are two adults and two children with the age of 14 and 15 years, and we have four big suitcases and four hand luggage with us
I don’t drive a car in self drive
My question is which is the shortest duration comfortable train from Rome to Positano 10 AM onwards when I can do 100% refundable ticket now, only since time is left for July
Which should be the station from where I should go for, finally reaching to Positano , which would be most convenient is it Sorrento or Salemo or some other station ?
Also, once I reach the above stations, since I have total 8 Bags, as I understand from the previous posts that this is the most convenient option from the station to Positano, however, the major question is will the bus except eight pieces of luggage for four of us ?
I also could to hire a van since I have luggage, so could the respected members. kindly suggest a few reliable and reasonable options with me, mobile numbers and email ID of the Italian van companies operating in that area .
Kindly also suggest some Tour operators who can pick us up from Positano and make us do a Capri Tour .
After Positano I will be going to Florence so again, kindly suggest the full bus and train route for that also between bus and ferry names, phone numbers and email ID .
From Florence, also, I required one day tour to Tuscany Vineyard and nearby villages, so kindly suggest the same .
If possible, kindly email me the above suggestions at [email protected], and it would be best if you could WhatsApp me
+91 9831344043 .
You are very thankful for your guidance and suggestions .
Regards .

dalmia123, welcome to the forums!
While you're waiting for assistance with your many questions, I'm going to strongly advise you to edit out your private email and WhatsApp information from the post above. For reasons of safety, we communicate publicly on this forum or, in some cases, by private messaging only within this website. For that same reason people are unlikely to contact you outside of this website as it's NEVER a good idea to share private contact information with people you don't know. Let us know if you don't know how to do an edit?

Responses will appear in thread format below your post above (see other threads as examples.) I'll suggest keeping the conversation public versus using private RS messaging so people who help you can see the entire conversation and contribute as it develops. Make sense?

  • Travelling with 8 suitcases in summer is absurd, it will turn your family vacation into a logistic nightmare. Just gettin' on and off crowded trains, walking down the aisles and finding a place for all your stuff will be a pain. There are laundries in Italy and nobody is going to notice how 4 tourists among 4,000,000 are dressed. Pack light. Keep money, phones and electronic toys in a small bag that can be put on the racks above your seat.

  • Direct high speed trains go from Florence to Salerno via Rome and Naples. They are run by two competing companies: trenitalia.com and italotreno.it/en

  • Make a Search on the forum to learn about discounted train tickets for advance purchases.

  • If I were you, I would take a direct train from Roma Termini station to Salerno and a Travelmar ferry to Positano. Then a ferry back to Salerno and a direct train to Florence.

  • if you prefer to hire a private driver, they usually meet their customers at Napoli Centrale station. Just google "NCC Positano" and dozens of companies will pop up.

  • you don't need a tour operator to take a ferry to Capri and a bus around the Island. Just follow the crowds...

Agree: the solution above for getting to/from both of those places is the one I would choose. I wouldn't pre-purchase train tickets for arrival day as you don't know if your flight will be on time, how long the immigration line will take, etc. Buy them when you arrive in Italy. With the amount of baggage you have, there's NO way I'd try to manage it on a SITA bus, which leads me to this...

Traveling with 8 LARGE suitcases will be a nightmare. You're going to be dealing with uneven pavement of all sorts of substrates, lots of stairs (Positano involves stairs from top to bottom!), lifts at train stations that may not be working, having to manage them on and off trains by yourselves, and (likely) rooms small enough at accommodations to make storage space an issue. Try to get down to at least medium sizes (we have 24" bags, and many travel for weeks with smaller bags than that) and plan to do laundry. Even with smaller bags I wouldn't use the buses during high season.

A head's up that the buses are going to be VERY busy all throughout the region, and it's not unusual to have to wait awhile (sometimes a long while) for one empty enough to pick up new passengers. Now, if the weather is nasty, the ferries may not run to/from Positano as it doesn't have a proper pier. In that case I might have a van-service contact in your pocket, or just book one advance and not take a chance on weather for arrival day. It will be pricey.

I do hope you've booked accommodations at all of your destinations? Would you be kind enough to share your complete itinerary, please?

Tour to Capri: I really don't think you need a tour: just a read-up in advance should be enough. Take a ferry both ways. If intent upon a tour, economical Mondo Shared (group) Tours For Rick Steves gets high marks from most who've used them but they don't depart from Positano. This one does but is a bit more pricey:

If willing to skip the tour and explore on your own, here's Capri's website; use it to plan what you want to do/see on the island. I won't vouch for the quality of advertised tours. https://www.capri.com. As previously mentioned, ferries and private tours may not run to Capri in bad weather/high winds.

Do you have plans to see Pompeii?
