Rome to Positano

We're spending a couple of days in Rome before traveling to Positano. What's the best way to get there? And how about getting around while in Positano? We were thinking of a bus but some friends suggested hiring a driver. Pros and cons?

"Best" is really about personal preference. I like to turn money into time, unless the travel time is a full day - which it won't be in your case. You can take a fast train from Rome to Naples (less than two hours), go downstairs at the Naples train station to the Circumvesuviana train stop and get off in Sorrento (at least one train an hour, often every half hour). There are buses, usually every 30 minutes during the day, from Sorrento (right outside the train station) down the Amalfi Coast to Positano. Hiring a driver will cost more (you may have to pay a roundtrip fare), but you can pull over along the coast to take advantage of the gorgeous views. The driver will also take you to your hotel doorstep (if it's accessible).

Agree with other poster, easy to get from Rome to Positano. I think total time about 4 hours, hour and half to Naples, hour to Sorrento and hour on bus to Positano. The train to Sorrento is downstairs from main station, Sorrento is last stop. Bus to Positano is right at train station, I think you buy bus ticket inside train station but can't remember. Sit on side of bus away from driver for best view and get off at second Positano stop and is easy walk down hill to town. For sightseeing, we always took bus. You could hire a private driver and don't know cost, but it will definitely be more expensive. Enjoy.

A more direct route is to take a fast train from Rome to Salerno (2 hours), then a ferry from Salerno to Positano (1 hour 10 minutes). No need to take the Circumvesuviana from Naples or the bus from Sorrento. Plus the ferry ride gives you wonderful views of the Amalfi coast. Here's the ferry schedule: http://tinyurl.com/8mslvl6
