Rome to Pompeii One Day Tour

Hi,

I'm going to be in Rome from May 20-26, 2024. I'm planning to go to Pompeii on Friday May 24 from Rome with Italiatours which I found on TripAdvisor for $209, taking the fast train to Naples then on to Pompeii, including lunch. Anybody have any experience with them?

As I'm a Solo traveler I'd prefer being in a group rather than hiring my own guide and going it alone. It's more expensive with a private guide and I like to be in a group because you can meet other people and chat about the stuff you're seeing.

What other tour groups have folks taken from Rome to Pompeii on a one day tour? Thank you.

Hi Janet -- Not to deter you from visiting Pompeii but you might want to consider Ostia Antica instead.
Travelling from Rome to Pompeii will be rather time consuming and I would argue that Naples is the better starting point for a visit to Pompeii. Ostia Antica, is MUCH closer and EASY to visit. While it takes about three hours to get to Pompeii, Ostia is a quick 30-minute train ride. Also, many scholars/historians feel that Ostia is a better example of a real, working-class town. Lastly, there will be fewer crowds and therefore you will likely have a more enjoyable, enriching experience.

There are several guided tours that you could take to Ostia from Rome. They end up being about a half-day in length and will be less expensive than $209. I think I recall seeing well rated tours in the $65 - $75 range.
Here is a link to one as an example. I haven't personally taken this company's tour but it sounds fairly good to me. You would meet your guide in Rome at Piazzale Ostiense, (located outside the Piramide (Line B) Metro station) at 8:15 a.m. and they would lead you from there. Here is the link. But look at other tours as well as perhaps there is a better one for you.

Ya, BUT ---- Pompeii and Ostia Antica have little in common other than being buried cities -- OA by mud and Pompeii by a volcano. Both are interesting but for different reasons. OA is a lovely park near Rome with lots of trees and shade. Convenient to Rome as it was once the port city to Rome. Restoration is good but it is much smaller than Pompeii. And it served a very different purpose than Pompeii

Part of the problem with visiting Pompeii is that most of the "good stuff" from Pompeii is on display in the museum in Naples. You really need to spend some time, at half day, in the museum to fully appreciate Pompeii and its story.

It's not fair to compare my travel style to yours, and you have to do what pleases you. But being solo means that you could take the fast train yourself, then the gritty and crowded Circumvsuviana commuter train, and be inside Pompeii by 10 or 11AM. You could buy a quick lunch in the cafeteria inside Pompeii, and get back to sightseeing fast. Then you could stay late if you want, or leave at 5 to have dinner in Rome by 8 or so. You can't see "all" of Pompeii in 8 hours! There can be lines for some villas, especially the Brothel.

Being in a group is warm and fuzzy, but slows you down, especially a group lunch.

We waited until our fourth trip to Italy to see Pompeii, despite being very interested in it. This is time consuming outing. It can be VERY hot and sunny in the last week of May, so be prepared with the right clothes, and a water carrier. (Water sold inside the park, too.)

I'm going to Pompeii. Please give me info about traveling from Rome to Pompeii in a one day tour. I know Ostia Antica is closer to Rome and I might go there, but POMPEII is where I really would like to go and see the excavations.

Also, I've been to Naples and DO NOT want to go there again. Thank you.

Any info on tour companies from Rome to Pompeii in May 2024 would be welcome. Thank you.

Ill keep to topic. (I actually find this forum tends to keep to the question better than TripAdvisor, and thus why I prefer it)

We used Asko Tours this year. (We travelled ourselves to Pompeii and then joined the tour which came from Rome and Naples).

The tour we did was Pompeii and Herculaneum with an Archeologist. Was about 2 hours in Pompeii and 2 hours in Herculaneum

Cost is 265, so more than yours.

We loved the details provided in the tour, and you could get to see both sites. It includes the high speed train, as well as the minivan to Pompeii, Herculaneum and back to Naples for the train. This does not include Lunch, but grabbing a sandwich is easy.

You can refund for 100% 1 day before the activity.

So, depending on what you want. Do you want the lunch at the winery, or would you prefer to see the two sites..

Hope this helps

Italiatours get great reviews.
