What the best way to get to Pompeii from Rome and spend the day there?

Train from Roma to Naples, about 1.5 hours, and then the Circumvesuviana train from Naples to Pompei.
It is quite a long day trip, and the real treasures from Pompei are in the museum in Naples.
An alternative to Pompei is Herculaneum (Ercolo in Italian). Again, reached by train from Naples. Ercolo is smaller than Pompei, also closer to Naples.
