Has anyone taken a tour bus from Rome to Pompeii for the day? After adding up the train costs, I'm wondering if it would be cheaper and less chaotic to take a tour bus. Thanks,
Barb
The bus is less expensive and also much less frequent than the train. You have far more flexibility on the train. Your choice.
My Dad had arranged a bus trip the first time I went. We ended up not having enough time in Pompeii ruins.
Few years ago I was in italy again with my husband. We took the train to Pompeii in the afternoon and stayed at a hotel in the town. So relaxing. Spent the whole next day going through the ruins and stayed at the hotel there that night. Next morning early we caught a train & went on to our next destination in Italy. We felt like we had enough time in the ruins & it was very relaxing after being in Rome. If you can't do this, I suggest going on the train, then you can control exactly how long you want to stay & don't have to hurry to catch a bus. Whatever you decide, have fun!
I will share my experience: Left Rome in the AM arrived at the Ruins at 1130. Had a leisurely lunch just out side the gates for 1.5 hours. Rented an audio guide and stayed as long as I wanted. Returned to Rome for a late dinner. While I was outside the restaurant waiting for friends and family, a tour bus from Rome arrived. As the tourists departed, the guide told them that they had only three hours before they were to get back on the bus. And this was without lunch! Take the train.
