Rome to Pompeii & Capri

Our family trip of 10 adults have paid for an 11 day tour of Italy, plus we paid to be in Rome 2 extra days - one day at the beginning and one day at the end. The frist day in Rome begins at the airport at 2:30 PM.The groups wants to see the Pompeii ruins on the first day in Rome and Capri on the last day. The tour starts at 6 PM the first day. How do we get it all in?

Thanks! That sounds great. Now, what about the trip from Rome to Capri the last full day?

I guess it is a lot further than we thought. Thank you for your input.

We are staying the Caserta as a base for seeing Pompeii. We booked a quad room at the Novotel for 80 euros (a bargin). Caserta is right on the Autostrada and is about 20 min. from Naples and 40 min. from Pompeii. You'll need a car to do this. But you could pick that up at the airport and be on your way. I understand you should schedule 3-4 hours to see Pompeii, so you should check the hours before you go. Also consider checking out the Archealogy museum in Naples that houses a lot of the stuff they unearthed from Pompeii.

Connie, Consider taking the train (changing trains in Naples) and going on to Pompeii town for the 1st night. Look at Hotel Amleto. We liked it a lot, and the town of Pompeii is a good place to relax.

Connie, I live in Rome and heading to Capri for the day would be challenging. First, you leave Rome and it is a 2 hour (Eurostar) train ride to Naples... Other trains take almost 3 hours! Then you have to take a hydrafoil to Capri (about 20 - 30 minutes)... then to get to the top level you have to ride a funicular - So travel time alone, not counting connection times, would be about more than 3 hours ONE-WAY, probably more like 4 with connection times.

I've stayed on Capri - iy's beautiful! But the island shuts down at night and most hydrafoils leave around 6 PM. Could you stay on the island?

I would agree also to see Pompeii on your scheduled first day you need to stay overnight and see it in the morning. Sounds like you have a lot ot time on the train?

I say slow down... in Italy, everything is "piano, piano..." which means slowly, slowly. I recommend perhaps day trips from Rome and slow down! I been here a while & still there's so much to see - Good luck!
