We hired a private tour guide named Mr. Gaetano Manfredi whose name we found on one of the Rick Steve's blogs. Gaetano was amazing! He set up the private driver to pick us up at our hotel in Rome, take us to Pompeii for a private tour, then on to Positano for lunch and shopping, then back to our hotel. The driver Leonardo was funny and informative, and had a wonderfully roomy and air conditioned van for our transport. Gaetano met us at the entrance to Pompeii and led us around the ruins to areas that we never would have known about if attempting to do a tour by ourselves. Gaetano even arranged for a refrigerator to store our son's insulin while we were touring. His tour was informative and hilarious; Gaetano like his driver Leonardo has a ringing sense of humor and our sons loved him! Worthy of note is that our sons typically hate guided tours but they really liked this one. We exchanged cell phone numbers with our driver and he was always very prompt in picking us up on our schedule. We made our own time frames. When the we got tired, we texted him and he met us within minutes. We spent a full two weeks in Italy touring multiple cities and sites, and the tour led by Gaetano was by far the best. We highly recommend him.
